How is xanax a legitimate medicine for treating anxiety?

Posted by admin on June 30th, 2009 and filed under treating anxiety | 6 Comments »

I have seen so many people get addicted to xanax, and i am just questioning its legitimacy. Yes i will agree that it helps with anxiety in the short term, but it does it fix the problem, it just covers it up temporarily. Since it must be taken everyday in anxious people, addiction is high, and when the person decides to quite the medication, the anxiety is still there, and some have to deal with addiction.

Not to mention the abuse and illegal distrubution of this medication. A person selling the pills on the street can literally make hundreds of thousands of dollars. More money is in the illegal sale than the legal sale of the drug.

In my mind the risks and high abuse potential of the drug for outweighs the benfits, so im sitting here wondering. Why is this drug FDA approved and distributed everywhere?
Very good point it inst just xanax, it goes for a bunch of medication, i just used xanax as a good example

Xanax (and everything else in the benzodiazepine family) really does help anxiety, not just mask the problem. It may just so happen that someone must keep taking it on a regular basis, which also happens with painkillers (say, someone who's in constant pain). Those are both highly addictive forms of medicine, but must be prescribed. The problem is that doctors pass them out to people like candy, and to those who don't really need them.

It has been proven that benzo's are more addictive than heroin, so being on them for a prolonged period of time and them abruptly stopping will cause anxiety to worsen, which is why it's better to wean of of it. But just because it's so addictive doesn't mean the FDA should have never approved it, it is highly effective against panicking, as well as sleep disorders.

What is the difference between Panic and Anxiety Attacks?

Posted by admin on June 30th, 2009 and filed under anxiety attacks | 7 Comments »

lately i've been having panic attacks, and I'm going to the doctor soon about it. But I want to know what is the difference between Panic attacks and anxiety attacks. Also when i do go to the doctor. what will they do actually, like how will I be test and what do I tell them.

Most of the time the terms panic attacks and anxiety attacks are used interchangeably. Panic and anxiety are different things though.

Panic is usually the feeling of intense pressure that you feel, such as when a panic attack sets on. It's triggered by the 'fight or flight' response which is a system in our brain that triggers adrenaline when a threat is detected.

The idea is that when you face a threat you're likely going to need to 'fight' that threat or 'flee' away from the scene. Either way you'll need the extra energy the adrenaline will give you.

The only problem is sometimes this fight or flight response, which is actually a pretty handy in many cases, is triggered in situations where fighting or escaping aren't the best options!

Anxiety on the other hand is usually used to refer to that general feeling of almost dread which you may feel in your chest or stomach.

The reason why 'panic attack' and 'anxiety attack' are used in place of each other is because anxiety often leads to panic and panic can lead to anxiety.

A strategy that I find particularly good is to relax your breathing as soon as you detect any panic setting in. By doing this you can counteract the effect of the fight or flight trigger by reassuring your brain that you are not actually in a life or death situation.

As for what the doctor will do: it's always a great idea to see your general practitioner when something like this happens just to make sure that there is nothing physical wrong.

However that being said, most doctors will advise you to relax, deal with any stress and then recommend if the problems continue that you see a therapist who specializes in panic and anxiety who will teach you some strategies to help you deal with the problem.

If you're interested you can find our more about this and several other simple but very effective psychological techniques in the free ebook 'The 10 Psychological Secrets Of Eliminating Anxiety & Getting Confident Now' at http://www.anxietytoconfidencenow.jfl.com

All the best with getting rid of your panic/anxiety attacks - I know you can do it. From my experience it is possibly to complete eliminate them.

Anxiety Attacks

Hey… totally different. I just thought that somewhere out there, someone might need this.

If you have anxiety attacks often, it’s extra helpful if you make your own recording. Hearing your own voice being calm helps calm you down better than anything I’ve tried (okay, cept a couple of calm pills).

If you want the audio version of just my voice, message me and include the email I can send it to.

I’d love to hear what you guys think…

Can Officers in the Army National Guard take anti-anxiety medications?

Posted by admin on June 29th, 2009 and filed under anxiety medications | 6 Comments »

I am a lietenant in the Guard who commissioned a year ago. I’ve had anxiety issues for quite some time, and I’ve tried other means of approaching it: Counseling, talking to friends and family, learning to techniques or ways to deal with it, but it is still really affecting my life and I’d like to try medication. I want to know if beginning to take a low-dose anti-anxiety medication will negatively impact Army Medical qualifications. Any input would be appreciated.

As long as the medications are prescribed it is legal. However - taking these medications will mean that you will need to a ‘fitness for duty’ medical evaluation.

The good news is that with the greater awareness of PTSD (which is an anxiety disorder) and the desire to retain good troops military doctors are now much more forgiving about anti-anxiety medications than they were in the past.

Now the bad news is that your use of ant-anxiety medications must be reported to your S-2. Depending on your duties and position your security clearance may be suspended during the time you are on those medications.
