I went to the doctor almost 3 weeks ago to discuss weird symptoms I was experiencing. (tension headaches, heaviness in chest and throat). My doctor prescribed me 0.5mg of Ativan. It does help me sleep but I wouldn’t dare take it during the day when I look after my little one because it makes me feel very sedated. Obviously Ativan is supposed to relax you to treat the anxiety but is there anything he can give me that I can take during the day so I don’t feel so tired?
Some of the antidepressants also have anti anxiety properties. You may want to ask your doctor about this. Maybe cutting the 0.5 mg of Ativan in half will help your anxiety without being so sedating. I hope you and your doctor will find what works best for you. Good Luck.
Is there any medication used to treat anxiety that does not make you sleepy?
What do I do about anxiety attacks?
I’ve never been a paranoid person or a person with anxiety problems until the last year or so. If anyone’s seen my earlier questions, I have had stomach problems since June of 2008 and I ever since I’ve been having anxiety attacks, mostly in the mornings during my first period class (around 7:30 in the A.M.). Could this be another symptom when it comes to my stomach problems? My mother says that they can just start at anytime in your life, but can they be brought on by an illness like mine?
The worse part about anxiety attacks is they happen at the most inopportune times. There is no doubt about it, no one ever wants to have an anxiety attack. Anxiety attacks have no redeeming features. They mess up a person’s day and seem to take control of the anxiety sufferer’s whole life!
Don’t Make An Effort to Avoid Oncoming Attacks
When we are suffering anxiety, the periods of time we refer to as anxiety attacks come and go. Always remember this. Someday we’ll all get to the point we will no longer suffer anxiety attacks. Until that day comes, anxiety, with all its horror, will find us. As soon as we accept this fact, the recovery process will begin.
It is when we hope each anxiety attack is the last one and try to fight every early sign anxiety could be brewing; we actually stoke the fires of anxiety. Never try to fight off an attack and never try to run away from one. We must be content to live with these frightening episodes for a while. As we do so, we are recovering.
Don’t Hope the Attack Will Be Mild or Short Lived
Once we learn to accept the fact anxiety attacks will occur during our recovery process, the next step is not to hope our intervening bouts will be speedy or hardly noticeable. If we do hope for less severe nervous symptoms we are actually trying to avoid anxiety. Hoping for a short attack is avoiding light. Unfortunately, it has the same negative impact as trying to completely avoid it.
Don’t Try To Act Anxiety Away
Sometimes when we are under assault from our nerves, we become great actors. We feel awful inside but try not to let anybody know. This makes things worse because we are fighting not to be seen as anxious.
This fighting puts an extra strain on us and as it does, it puts more of a burden on our adrenaline systems. This, of course, will make us more nervous. We cannot win the battle of nervousness by strain or trying to ignore our condition or trying to do anything. With anxiety, we can only become victorious by completely surrendering.
Do - Face Your Enemy
So, if fighting, trying to look calm, trying to avoid attacks or wishing they would be mild doesn’t get us on the track to recovery. What does? First, if an attack is going to come, we have to have to take the attitude we will just let it. We will relax our bodies as best we can and acknowledge the horrific feelings happening to us and take the attitude we are going to let panic run wild.
When we do this, we no longer are fighting or struggling against anxiety and we are no longer trying to run away or hide from it. Fighting and running away are the two things anxiety thrives on. When we refuse to do either, anxiety has no choice but to roll over and die!
Do - Give It the Rodney Dangerfield Treatment
As we recover, we start to realize there were many times we made anxiety much worse by being apprehensive of the feelings it gave us. This apprehension is a form of respect. When we make no plans how we will try to fight off an attack, we are treating anxiety like Rodney Dangerfield; no respect!
Giving anxiety no respect is what gets it to leave us alone. Once we know how to do this, the anxiety attacks become less and less severe and eventually, they disappear altogether.
I suggest you to go the doctor and have it a check-up
treating social anxiety disorder with zoloft in children……………?
The doctor just prescribed 50mg of zoloft to my son for social anxiety disorder. I know that zoloft is approved for people over the age of 18 with this condition. What about children under the age of 18. Isn’t 50mg a little excessive for a child. So anyone with any answers or similar experiences please let me know. Thanks so much!
I would never give a child that young medication like that. Let him be a kid. Don’t give it to him. I say get a second opinion.
Anxiety Disorder?
I’m think that I might have an anxiety disorder (probably social or generalized anxiety disorder) , I’ve had the symptoms for about 2 years now and it’s driving me crazy.
The problem I’m afraid that I’m only noticing the symptoms because I’ve read about them. I don’t know know if I should see a doctor to help me, but my parents believe that only crazy people need therapists and that little things like what I’m feeling shouldn’t be enough to get help, so I can’t convince them. I really don’t know what to do.
Thanks to all who have answered. I’ll take this all into consideration.
Another thing is that I’m afraid to go to a doctor, I’m afraid if it’s not really anything and that the doctor might think I’m and idiot.
Do you have a family doctor? If you do, tell him your symptoms and see if he can make any suggestions.
Some of the medications make the symptoms worse for teens, so be very careful if you get a prescription for an antidepressant.
Good luck.
Future of anxiety medications?
What does the future hold for sufferers of anxiety (social, generalized, panic), in regards to medication? Right now, the main medications that are prescribed are SSRI’s and anti-anxiety agents (Xanax). For many sufferers of anxiety, including myself, these medications offer little in the way of relief (xanax seems to offer only short term relief and has problems with dependency and withdrawal). Do you think they will come out with more promising medications/therapies in the near future (next 20-30 years)? Or will the current medications still dominate?
I think as research progresses there will be better medications. I just wish they would come out with ones that cause less sexual side effects.
How do I get on anti-anxiety medication?
I feel bad b/c I just had a baby 4 months ago and I don’t always have energy for her b/c I just feel drained. The anxiety has put "knots" in my stomach for the last few months and they won’t go away. I know my anxiety/depression has been brought on because the father of my baby walked out on me and I feel really really low.
Should I just talk to my regular family doctor and ask for meds? What kind do you suggest?
I took anti anxiety/depression meds (Zoloft) and to be honest I can describe it as your mind and body being seperated. After you get passed all the temp side effects (dry mouth, drowsy, or the always lasting never hungry one <3) You just see things for what they are, your never really happy but your not sad, your just doing what you have to do.
The real downfall is, I was very open about things on my mind. So yeah, expect no resistrictions on speaking your mind about things. And my creativity suffered for in all honestly depression fuels my creative nature.
Is there a NATURAL treatment/remedy for anxiety?
I’ve been experiencing some really bad anxiety lately, and it is really affecting my life. Is there some kind of natural treatment/remedy/supplement for treating anxiety?
Any over-the-counter pill that you can take that will calm you?
I tried Kava Kava, but it did nothing for me.
I need something that will definitely work.
Btw, I should mention that I’m mainly seeking a temporary quick fix at the moment. I need something that’ll work a.s.a.p.
A pill or something than will help calm me.
Valerian root works for me. Valium is derived from it. It has a terrible smell but once you get passed that it will calm you and also can be used as a sleep aid. You can buy it almost any where herbal remedies are sold including Walmart.
Can you be disqualified from purchasing and carrying a firearm in PA if you have a history of anxiety disorder?
Basically, lets say you have a history of generalized anxiety disorder, and are being treated for it. Will you be turned down when you apply for a concealed carry license, as well as when you have a background check while attempting to purchase a firearm? More specifically, this is focused on the state of Pennsylvania.
No. If you have not been INVOLUNTARILY committed to a mental institution, you are not disqualified for the permit. There are thousands of people who take meds for anxiety disorders (depression, bipolar, ocd ect…) who own buy firearms & have carry permits.
what medications are prescribed for social anxiety?
I believe I have social anxiety and was wondering what medications are prescribed for this disorder. And if anyone is dealing with social anxiety, how bad is it, and what medication or medications are working for you and why?
GAD or general anxiety disorder is a crappy disease to be treated for.
typically the doctor will put you on something for both anxiety and depression, no matter how much you tell them you arent depressed because most doctors believe you cannot have one without the other.
so the most common meds for GAD are
xanax
zoloft
ativan
paxil
wellbutrin
effexor
the side effects are different for everyone, but in most of these pills i found that the side effects were/are:
fatigue
loss of interest in sex
short term memory loss
dry mouth
yawning
sweating
indifference (meaning youre neither happy nor sad)
but - with that being said, you should still find the pill thats right for you.
it will be a long ride, but if you can stick it out, youll eventually feel human again.
good luck!
Why are you not supposed to drink alcohol when you are on anti-anxiety / depression medication?
I am on anti-anxiety and depression medication. When I was reading over the information on it, it said to not consume alcohol. I was wondering if anyone knew why?
There are a number of problems with the mixture of alcohol and antidepressants.
Antidepressants make you especially susceptible to the intoxicating effects of alcohol.
The effects of alcohol prevent the antidepressants from working. Alcohol prevents antidepressants from being effective. This is not because it interferes with the absorption of antidepressants; it is because of the effects of alcohol upon brain chemistry.
The use of alcohol leads to increased depression and panic symptoms, as well as, increase the risk of suicide.
Antidepressants increase one’s susceptibility to the intoxicating effects of alcohol. Also, both alcohol and some anti-depressants increase the possibility of seizures.
Alcohol is a depressant… so think for your self, what will be the consequence of taking a depressant (alcohol) AND an antidepressant together?
